August 17 Meeting: "Where the Little Things Are"

This month we will be treated to a presentation by our own Nannette and Bill Van Antwerp:
Where the Little Things Are
An exploration into finding unique macro subjects and how to photograph/video them.
Bill Van Antwerp is the current president of LAUPS and works as the Chief Scientific Officer for a start-up company trying to help people with diabetes. He has been shooting photos underwater for over 15 years using a variety of systems from compact to DSLR and specializes in nudibranchs on a stage. His wife, Nannette, a retired engineer and also an LAUPS board member, shoots award winning underwater video. Together they travel the world hitting diving hot spots from Alaska to Indonesia shooting a variety of subjects, but both have a special love for the ocean's smaller inhabitants. "Where the Little Things Are" will describe where to look to find interesting macro subjects, specifically which creatures associate with certain types of marine life, with a focus on some of the lesser-known critters you might find if you just know to look for them!

The Photo Mini-Comp and the Video Mini-Comp are both: "Pelagic."

***If you are entering a video that you are bringing in on a thumb drive, you must declare your intended entry by Monday midnight, so we will know whether we are able to have both open and novice competitions or a single combined category.

July 20th Meeting: Dora Sandoval

Please join us on Wednesday, July 20th at 7:30 pm, at the Natural History Museum in the Times Mirror Room.
Citizen Science on the Quino el Guardian
Dora Sandoval will be speaking with us about her newest endeavor: Rocio Del Mar's sister ship, Quino el Guardian, Quino was specifically designed to pursue conservation, education, and research. Our Citizen Science Program partners marine scientists with enthusiastic and mindful divers who can make a difference. Recreational divers benefit from observing scientists conduct research, assist with tasks, and receive in nightly presentations.
We carry the conscience and awareness of keeping our oceans protected. Redesigning Quino into a ship specifically built for scuba diving and scientific research has presented endless challenges, but visualizing it's mission and the results it will generate on conservation and protecting our ocean inspires us to pursue excellence.
