Platinum Sponsor:Ocean Rover Cruises - Indonesia Luxury Liveaboard Diving Cruises
Indonesia Liveaboard Diving Cruises
A 19th century Dutch writer once described Indonesia as “wrapped around the Equator like an emerald band”. Ever since, this island nation has captured the imagination of all who visited there. Those who have dived and explored the underwater world of Indonesia agree that it has one of the most diverse marine environments on the planet.
NORTH SULAWESI
Northern Sulawesi, the area around Manado, is one of the best-known diving destinations in Indonesia. It is easily accessible by air from Singapore with Silk Air four times a week and Jakarta & Bali with Garuda Airlines daily. The topside scenery is dramatic with jungle clad mountains and volcanoes dominating the landscape. Unlike most of Indonesia, Northern Sulawesi’s inhabitants are devout Christians and a pleasant sense of calm and peacefulness prevails.
Commencing June 2008 Ocean Rover will be based in this unique area offering our guests the opportunity to enjoy North Sulawesi liveaboard diving in comfortable and familiar on board surroundings. The key words, as always, will be variety and quality.
Ocean Rover’s departure point in Manado is the deep-sea port of Bitung in the Lembeh Straits. Each cruise will start and finish with a full day of diving in this location of choice for underwater photographers in search of unique macro subjects.
Our divers will also spend time enjoying the world-class diving around Bunaken National Marine Park and Bangka Island. Here divers will encounter spectacular walls and reefs of hard and soft corals, an underwater environment that has enchanted divers from all over the globe.
Ocean Rover then journeys further north to a chain of volcanic islands, the Sangihe Archipelago: dozens of islands, some of which are over fifteen hundred meters high and densely covered by coconut palms. This area has some of the deepest and clearest water on the planet.
Some of the highlights include an underwater lava flow, a natural hot spring jacuzzi and a dive at Mahangatang, an underwater volcano which releases silver bubbles into the sea, an unforgettable sight. Conditions permitting, we also do a spectacular pinnacle dive at Para Island. And because a Sulawesi cruise is not complete without a day at Minahasa and Popo (a.k.a. Bethlehem), we visit these newly discovered critter sites as well.
Overall, Ocean Rover offers the most comfortable way of experiencing all that liveaboard diving North Sulawesi has to offer in one single cruise.
RAJA
AMPAT
Raja Ampat is one of the youngest provinces of this huge country. With a population of only four people per square kilometre it is seen as a vast un-tapped area. Oil and copper represent over 90% of the value of the province’s exports.
In the last few years the Indonesian province of Papua, in the western part of the island of New Guinea, became famous because of its untouched, colourful reefs and great island scenery. Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati and Misool are the main islands that make up Raja Ampat, an area which consists of more than 1500 islands in total. Cruising through this unique area is breath-taking, to say the least.
The biodiversity of Raja Ampat is unique. In this archipelago are recorded more than 1000 species of reef fishes, more than 700 molluscs and more than 560 species of hard corals, which is more than 75% of all know hard corals worldwide. More than 4.6 million hectares of more or less untouched underwater areas are waiting with mangroves, colourful coral gardens, deep walls, giant schools of fish, manta rays, wobbegong sharks, as well as nudibranchs and critters.
Sorong, with 130,000 inhabitants, is an important city for oil and the starting point for our cruises. The city is easily accessible from Singapore with Silk Air via Manado, (one night stopover), then with Merpati or Wing Air on to West Papua.
Commencing September 2009 Ocean Rover will be based in this unique area. Our crew will meet you at the airport or your hotel and bring you to the departure point in Sorong for boarding. During the itinerary we will dive at the best locations in Raja Ampat. Our experienced dive guides will seek out interesting marine life for our guests plus macro subjects and wide angle impressions for the underwater photographers and videographers.
Cruising through the islands of Raja Ampat while relaxing on Ocean Rover and enjoying the delicious meals prepared by our chef is by far the most enjoyable and comfortable way to visit this unforgettable destination.

Platinum Sponsor: Lembeh Resort - North Suluwesi, Indonesia
North Sulawesi offers unparalleled marine biodiversity, with a wide range of dive experience options. But for divers interested in searching out encounters with bizarre and beautiful critters, Lembeh Strait, located near the port town of Bitung, hosts the best muck diving on the planet. And besides the sand, divers can take the plunge on pinnacles, walls and slopes of extravagant hard and soft coral gardens as well as a number of wrecks, some dating from WWII. Diversity is the operative word here.
Lembeh Resort offers comfortable accommodations set in beautifully landscaped tropical gardens overlooking Lembeh Strait. For a truly exceptional experience in a relaxed and professional atmosphere, Lembeh Resort is the obvious choice.
The Lembeh Resort dive team have extensive experience diving in the strait and their infectious enthusiasm will result in the best possible dives day after day. Our focus on personal attention means that we will do our utmost to ensure that our guests fulfil their dreams and see most if not all the critters on their wish lists. Unlimited diving is offered to resort guests, with the majority of the 40+ sites within the strait only minutes away by boat. So guests can rest assured that they can accomplish as much diving as they desire.
The spacious camera room and equipment washing/drying facilities are only steps from the boat. Once a guest has made his or her first dive our dive team will see that the equipment is carried, washed and stored and then be on the boat assembled and ready for further dives. Special consideration will be given to photographers, whose delicate equipment often seems the center of their universe. Our boat crews will treat camera gear with the respect it deserves. The friendly and cheerful people of North Sulawesi are as much a selling point as the diving. Our professional, courteous and attentive service will be as memorable as the critters.
Platinum Sponsor: Manta Ray Bay Hotel and Yap Divers - Yap
Over 100 Manta Rays live year round in the waters surrounding Yap. In the winter (usually December to late April) the Mantas congregate in even greater numbers in Mi'l Channel for the mating season. During the summer season, they spend their mornings in Goofnuw channel in the Valley of the Rays.
Every morning, huge Manta Rays cruise into protected channels that penetrate the barrier reef. They come to "Cleaning Stations" where small specialized reef fishes called cleaners pick off tiny parasites that the Mantas pick up in blue water while feeding. The Mantas slowly circle the cleaning station and frequently pass within inches of the observing diver's heads. Small Mantas are generally about 8 feet from wingtip to wingtip. The larger rays are up to 14 feet across.
Founded by diver Bill Acker, Manta Ray Bay Hotel and its diving outfitter Yap Divers became world-renown for offering spectacular manta encounters in the island’s many hard-coral channels. But Yap is no longer known simply for mantas. Today’s divers journey from around the world to photograph unique underwater species such as mating Mandarin Fish, Pegasus Sea Moths, Antennarius Commerson Giant Frogfish and Inimicus Didactylus Scorpion Fish. Travelers are also treated to the unique hospitality of one of the Pacific’s richest, most intact cultures.

Gold Sponsor: Andrew Sollmon Marine Photography & Classes
A native of California he spends much of his time diving and photographing the rich temperate waters of his home state but also travels abroad several months each year to create new images for his stock file. A Scuba Instructor since 1980, he picked up his first underwater camera that same year and slowly converted from underwater hunting to the challenges of underwater photography. It was the slower pace of observing and trying to approach marine life closely that helped him to see and understand the intricacies and miracles of the ocean ecosystem. As he learned to appreciate the living sea, his photographic skills also grew and now he is one of a fortunate few that earn a living as an underwater photographer. His work has been featured over the last few years in several books, magazines, calendars and posters. In addition, he is also one of the few underwater photographers on display at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Gold Sponsor: Nautilus Explorer - British Columbia, Guadalupe, Socorro, Sea of Cortez, Clipperton
We cater to more experienced divers on these trips and specialize in looking after photographers and rebreather divers as well. Our vessel was custom built from the keel up as a very comfortable, safe and easy riding platform and generally handles the ocean crossings without any problem. Our handpicked friendly, cheerful and professional crew, a sparkling clear fresh water hot tub, 2 different sun decks with lots of deck chairs, a really comfortable main salon, 30 different microbrews, extensive wine list and a great selection of single malts in the ship's bar as well as blissful quiet during the day all contribute to a wonderful onboard ambience. It is a common misconception that these trips are in rough seas the whole time -- the reality is that both San Benedicto and Socorro are large islands with many protected harbors and that the winter seas here are the calmest of the year. The only time we dive "in the open" is the day spent at Roca Partida.
The lushness and density of invertebrate life in the pristine and sheltered waters of British Columbia is amazing. The octopus and wolfeel encounters are legendary. The scenery topsides is spectacular as is the wall and drift diving. Our Port Hardy and Vancouver Island charters are perfect for serious divers and photographers.
Divers visiting this area for the first time are often concerned that they will be cold. This concern is completely unfounded for anyone diving in a drysuit. (note from Captain Mike -- if you haven't tried a drysuit yet, don't worry. It's no big deal and it takes me longer to get in my wetsuit than my drysuit. We have lots of rental drysuits onboard if you need one.) Water temperatures are consistent from Vancouver to Juneau and average 49 to 52 degrees during the summer. We can honestly say that it is easy to stay nice and warm in a good drysuit, hood and gloves and that we have been a lot colder diving in a 5 mil wetsuit off Cabo San Lucas in late December.
One of the most incredible things about British Columbia is how calm and sheltered the inside waters are. You can go for days at a time without feeling any movement in the boat which is quite uncanny!! While the underwater topography can be very steep and strong currents provide some timing challenges in order to dive at "slack", our experienced crew and custom designed 38 foot dive skiff are there to make your life easy and the diving "good fun". With our skilled crew at the helm, it's unlikely that you will notice much current at all during the "dive window".
This destination is perfect for photographers and other serious divers who want to maximize the number of cold water dives they do during a trip. Popular charters include 7 day / 6 night departures from Vancouver to Port Hardy and 10 day circumnavigations of Vancouver Island. Most of these trips include 2 overnight runs and a lot of time spent at anchor diving every "slack".

Gold Sponsor: Wetpixel and Wetpixel Quarterly - Forum and Magazine
Wetpixel LLC announces the arrival of a new quarterly print magazine devoted to high-quality underwater photography. Wetpixel Quarterly brings fans of the underwater realm spectacular imagery in a landscape-oriented, high-resolution format. As well as celebrating the beauty of the deep, Wetpixel Quarterly provides a forum for a necessary dialog on marine conservation among photographers, researchers, conservationists, and the general public. To help foster this community, the magazine accepts and encourages contributions from professional and amateur photographers alike. Wetpixel.com is the most respected online destination for all things related to underwater imaging; Wetpixel Quarterly presents an exciting new venue for showcasing the work of this community in print.
The magazine's founders, Eric Cheng and Elijah Woolery—both avid divers and underwater photographers—hope to foster environmental stewardship by highlighting conservation concerns in Wetpixel Quarterly's theme-based issues. "By drawing attention to the links between the beauty of the underwater world and the action required to sustain these environments," says Woolery, "we're hoping to increase interest in preserving threatened areas around the globe—and to help protect those areas that are still pristine." Through interviews, articles, open contests, and, most importantly, the lenses of its contributors, Wetpixel Quarterly brings to the page a new sense of the fragility and splendor of underwater life.

Bronze Sponsor: Diversitea - Herbal Supplement Tea for Divers
Diversitea has been tested in Hyperbaric Studies with impressive results.
Diversitea owner Janine Davis began blending teas in the 1980’s to treat various health conditions that were not responsive to allopathic (conventional) treatments. She studied plant remedies extensively, and amassed a substantial knowledge base.
In 1996 she became a certified diver, and ran across this passage in a reference book :
“Nutritional Scientists have discovered that Red Clover blossoms contain the trace element Molybdenum, that is now beginning to be recognized as a very essential nutrient in relatively minute quantities. Molybdenum plays an important role involving the discharge of Nitrogen from our bodies. Molybdenum’s essential trace accumulations are in the liver, kidneys, bone and skin. The Molybdenum in Red Clover Tops helps the system to discharge Nitrogenous waste, aids in cleaning the system of impurities, and helps retard the spread of infection.”
This led her on a quest to discover whether this property would hold true for Scuba divers. Over the next several years, she went on dive trips, carrying her water bottle of Red Clover Tea and enduring the skeptical looks of fellow divers when she explained that this tea helped her feel less tired than when she did not use it. She thought if it even added a small edge to her margin of safety in terms of nitrogen elimination, it was worth using.
As her research continued, she started experimenting with other herbs whose properties would enhance the diving experience, as well as add flavor and nutritional benefits to the blend.
At the beginning of 2002, convinced that there was real potential for this product to make a difference in diver safety, Davis started working with a manufacturing facility to develop Diversitea.
In March 2002, Diversitea received its first “sea trial’” on a live-aboard Safari in the Maldives with 12 divers, most of whom were willing to try the tea, and fill out a questionnaire at the end of the trip. The result of this test was that all reported feeling less fatigued after multiple dives on multiple days, and found the tea refreshing. All now use Diversitea regularly.
In 2002 Davis was Nitrox certified, and realized the effect of drinking Diversitea is similar to that of diving using Recreational (32 to 36 percent) Nitrox. During dive trips one feels less fatigued after repetitive dives over several days. However, with Diversitea there is no issue of Oxygen Toxicity to contend with. Scuba Diver Magazine dubbed Diversitea “Nitrox in a Cup”.

Bronze Sponsor: Ultralight Control Systems
The Ultralight arms may look like just another set of adjustable spherical ball arms on the market; but close inspection will prove otherwise. Ultralight arms have been totally re-engineered to incorporate the maximum clamping action possible. The inclusion of an o-ring greatly increases the friction forces at the joint, therefore, keeping the arms where you put them. The o-ring also gets away from the metal to metal contact between the clamp and the ball of the arm. The lightweight pattern not only looks great; but also allows the arms to keep their required rigidity while keeping the weight to an absolute minimum.
Our system is designed as a three-clamp system to function as your own arm would. A joint at three positions gives you the maximum flexibility. Variations using two clamps are possible, especially for video applications. The ball size is 1" or 25mm.
Ultralight offers a full line of adapters for every underwater strobe and video light. There are also numerous adapters for use on still and video housings. We make trays and pivots for Nikonos, Sea and Sea cameras, and housings.
We think that once you have tried our product you will agree it is the best, lightest weight, most convenient, and versatile on the market.
There are other arm systems out there; but none can compare to ours. We may be a little more expensive; but you will never have to buy another set of arms again.
